The what, who, why and where of Ingres R3.

Savio Saldanha

Ingres is a reliable, high-performance database solution that offers the scalability, integration and flexibility that developers require when building enterprise-class systems on enterprise-class databases. This release marks the first time these enterprise features are being brought to the open source community. Designed for "set-and-forget" operations on a compact footprint, Ingres is the ideal unattended database for both enterprise and embedded deployment.

So you might be asking yourself - oh I already use a database - why should I go to this presentation? Where does Ingres r3 functionally exceed other Open Source databases?

Developers will find valuable, features such as:

Integrated Transaction Management - tightly coupling transaction processing to the core database engine, provide integral data integrity and a more seamless implementation than a plug-in transaction processor.

Unicode data support - provides for global language support by enabling Unicode standard support as well as automatic conversion between Unicode and non-Unicode data types.

Sub Query Support - the ability to wrap complex queries as a single request. When combined with the Ingres cost-based query optimizer, complex queries are decomposed and processed in parallel, in the same time as very simple queries.

Procedures and Triggers - enables database procedures to be directly executed within the context of the database server and events notification to all interested parties.
